Bam! . . . Here’s a Baby! The Chronicles of Sadie (day 1)

July 16th, 2008

Focus Text: Psalm 139: 13-16 (NLT)

13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.

Stop Here and Reflect Before Reading Ahead

Most of you who know me know that today (which would be yesterday for you readers) was the day that my first child, Sadie, made her grand entrance into this world.  In honor of this momentous occasion, I dedicate the remaining Daily Threads of this week to reflections about this miraculous experience.  I invite you to sit back and journey with me as we explore The Chronicles of Sadie (cue the impressive opening orchestral score).

It is 9:00 p.m. at this moment and I’m sitting in a reclined hospital chair next to the hospital bed.  Just before picking up my computer to type this thread, my precious new daughter was nestled snuggly in my arms, fast asleep.  Her every little breath, squeak, and sigh cause her Mommy and I to smile.  That’s all it takes: a squeak.

She’s wearing a miniature toboggan, a little newborn t-shirt, a diaper, and a little censor attached to her leg with a cotton-wrap that will sound an alarm if anyone tries to take her away from the hospital– cool! Diaper-wise, yeah I’m pretty experienced already having changed the first two poopy diapers with an efficiency that boggles the mind!  I’m pretty sure they’re going to offer me a nursing job before I leave.

Now, Sadie is in bed with her Mommy . . . still sound asleep.  It is just the three of us and it’s about the closest thing to bliss that I’ve ever experienced.

I’m taken aback by so many varied things that occurred today, but I think the most striking characteristic of the day is that Laura and I came to the hospital just the two of us and we will leave the hospital with three.  I know, I know, it sounds obvious; but it’s really a crazy idea.  One minute, we were sitting in the operating room talking to the nurses and doctors who were standing there and five minutes later . . . bam!

We knew she was in there.  We even had some idea what she might look like through the stunning technology of the 4-D Ultrasound (previous blog at https://johndriver.wordpress.com/2008/06/).  The rooms are painted.  The car seat is installed.  The meals are frozen.  The furniture is assembled.  The baby’s closet is full and Daddy’s wallet is empty.  I mean, we knew she was coming.

But preparatory details still can’t prepare one for the moment that it happens . . . and it happens fast!

Well, it happens fast to us.  In actuality, it’s been happening for nine months– we just couldn’t see it. Since we each view life through our own personal set of lenses, we often think that the reality thereof is colored the way that we see it.  For example, relationships end everyday seemingly suddenly and one party asks, “But why?  Everything was fine yesterday!”  No, everything was not fine, you just weren’t aware of what is wrong.  Therefore, the moment that we encounter an experience, we consider it new; but the reality is, its our entrance into the situation that’s actually new.

So, Sadie may be new to me, but only because this is the first time I’ve met her.  But there is someone else who has already met her.  Psalm 139 reveals the ultimate ultrasound of the Creator’s handiwork.  Not only has He been watching Sadie, He’s been knitting her together like a priceless woven tapestry.  She’s new to us, but she’s quite familiar to Him.

I wonder what other miracles are growing deep within the recesses of our spirits just waiting for the “bam” moment to occur.  I promise that nothing of value just appears; it usually germinates within us growing, maturing, and preparing for the moment that the light of the outside world will expose its beauty and reveal the handiwork of the Creator.

Maybe tomorrow, you’ll just suddenly overcome that temptation . . . bam!

Maybe in a few days, that person you’ve been praying for will suddenly have a turnaround . . . bam!

Rest assured, our “bams” are the just the moments that God lets us in on His masterpiece plan and as we cradle close to our hearts the miracles of His mercy, we will remember that His hands are weaving our dreams.

Tonight, I hold my little bundled dream in my hands and, as the Psalmist says, “how well I know it.”

  1. It’s funny you should write this because yesterday I left you and and Laura a myspace comment with the same similar thought. Yesterday was a day that God had planned. Doesn’t the realization of the fact that God has known about Sadie already…. always and forever… totally blow you away?

John, there is absolutely nothing, NOTHING, NOTHING… absolutely NOTHING in this world like experiencing the birth of your own child. The instantaneous shot of love that you have for that little baby is something that is indescribable. It has no ends, no bounds, no parameters. And when the second one comes along, you fall in love in the exact same way.

And to think that this is the same love that God has for us. WHEW!

  2. My heart is full for you! I remember the moment I held Nate and became MOM. What a sobering moment. So many answers and so many questions all at once. You and Laura are and will be wonderful parents. I love you both, and now Sadie, very much.

  3. We are so excited for you and Laura! Even though this day must seem like you’ve arrived at an incredible destination it is only the beginning of a wonderful, sometimes challenging, adventure! Sounds like a great chapter for “No Arrivals”…

You are in our hearts and we love you…all three of you!!

  4. Wow…amazing isn’t? You guys brought into tthis world and leaving with one. Really thats what it it a miracle. “An event that appears inexplicable by the laws of nature and so is held to be supernatural in origin or an act of God” Miracles are spontaneous, they cannot be summoned, but come of themselves. God knows hers every waking moment and was and is taking care of her. And now you guys are like her “angels” watching her from littelry..above. Haha. I hear about babies being born all the time with families I know. But this one is just differant for me to hear…I dont even know why. All I know is that she has now the 2 most beautiful and wonderful parents in TN..not to mention she goes to the greatist church in america. ALSO, has the biggest and loving family “church” she will ever have..

Love you both dearly!…Papa John and beautiful Laura!!

  5. I have to agree, there is nothing on earth like it. There is this overwhelming amount of love that just floods your soul. You are forever changed by this little miracle. God has given you the chance to assist Him in one of the most amazing things known to man. Parenting. It has its ups and downs. It has its glory moments and its sad moments. You will be challenged beyond your wildest imagination. But, it is all worth it. Just like you said John….all it takes is a little squeak and your heart melts all over again.

We love you guys….Welcome baby Sadie.

  6. I love the “bam” moments! It helps me to stay encouraged during my life, especially when things aren’t always going the way I had imagined. God usually deals with me in this way when I have about had it and then bam! – one little uplift and I’m easy sailing again! I can’t believe that he creates us with such care, and truly does know us beyond anything we can fathom. That is so exciting to realize. He never finishes weaving together our lives either. From the time before we are born to when we die, he is writing our life story. That’s so awesome! I’m so excited about Sadie Jane! She is seriously the most beautiful baby ever. I absolutely think she has the coolest lips to! Anyways, congratulations! You guys deserve her so much! I love all of you, you cute Driver family of THREE! 🙂

  7. Wow! I love it. I stil can’t believe you and Laura have a kid. That’s so sweet. I bet you can’t wait to get her home. =D You can no longer say there’s two Drivers cuz now….. there’s three! Yay. I’m so happy for you. I can’t wait to see her.

    That’s all =D

  8. Wow Pastor John. You’re going to make a great dad. She’s going to be a very lucky kid. You’re now what we call a “family.”
It’s going to be amazing to see how God works in her life.
And last night in service, I love how you talked about Sadie’s little foot and made it fit in with the service. Great Pastor. Great Dad. Great mom. Great God.
